The Australian Open (like the other three Grand Slams) has always been an event to watch for great tennis amongst all the best players in the world and often includes amazing shots and feats. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like the following video, though. In one of the first round matches in the ladies singles, Agneiszka Radwanska had her racquet broken cleanly in half while attempting to return opponent Kimiko Date-Krumm’s serve.
Yup, you read that right. Not the strings on the racquet or anything decidedly less hardcore like that. The entire racquet head itself broke off.
Radwanska’s befuddled expression is just super LOL. And apparently, she had earlier smashed that same racquet in the court out of frustration. Still, either Babolat isn’t all that good at making durable racquets, or 40+ year old Date-Krumm has a lot more strength in her than she looks like she does.
(On a side note, I’m really surprised that someone so old in tennis years, and who only came back a short while back from a break several years long, can give so many much-younger, much-higher-ranked players a good run for their money. She just barely lost this match in the third set.)
